Távora-Varosa
The region shows traces of human occupation since protohistory. Romans, Suevi and Visigoths passed through the region, being chosen by the Cistercian monks to build some of the most beautiful Cistercian architectural specimens there. An example of this is the Monastery of S. João de Tarouca, the first in the Iberian Peninsula, built in the 12th century. Cradle area of the writer Aquilino Ribeiro, it produces some of the best national wines and sparkling wines.
