Trás-os-Montes

Already during the occupation of the Romans the vine was cultivated and wine was produced in the region of Trás-os-Montes.

The climate in summer is dry and hot and in winter the temperatures drop, sometimes to 0 °C. The soils are essentially granite, poor, with schist stains, and in a small area there are calcareous gneiss and alluvial stains.

The wine region of Trás-os-Montes is divided into three sub-regions: Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês. The vineyards in the sub-region of Chaves are located on the slopes of small valleys, where the tributaries of the river Tâmega flow. The plateau of the sub-region of Valpaços is rich in water resources. The Mirandês Plateau is located in the Serra do Mogadouro plateau, southwest of the region.
