The oldest sparkling wine in Bairrada
This program can start at the Humberto Delgado – Lisbon airport, at the Hotel where the visitor is staying (whether or not is part of our network of partners).
The basements that visitors will visit are the oldest in Bairrada. The company was created in 1920, celebrating 100 years this year. In 1939 it started the production of natural sparkling wines by the champagne method, having at the time the support of the Frenchman – Gaston Mainousson.
In 1959, it started marketing still wines from Bairrada.
In 1972, the cellars bought a farm in Bairrada where they replanted selected grape varieties and also invested in the winemaking process and quality control of the wines. Nowadays, the specificity of these cellars is that they achieve a perfect alliance between modernity and tradition, combining their modern vinification and quality control technologies with quality production methods.
The visit to the cellars is a guided tour by a wine expert, followed by the tasting of 4 wines with history, with cheese and toasted sausages.
After the visit and tasting, the visitors go to a local restaurant to taste one of the typical gastronomy dishes of Bairrada – Leitão, accompanied by the sparkling wine produced by Caves S. João or by another sparkling wine equally of good quality produced in the country.
In the afternoon
Travellers will visit the Bairrada Wine Museum. The building of contemporary architecture has a permanent exhibition, designated by wine routes and has temporary exhibitions and other events with activities related to the world of wine (closes on Monday).
After the visit to the museum, visitors will return to Lisbon to the places they left from or within the Lisbon area.
